Winners of the 2012 AEFH scholarships
Q&A
Eligibility
If I'm a graduating senior and plan to go to graduate school or portfolio school, can I apply?
Yes, if you're going to a graduate school. However, we can't make checks payable to a for-profit organization like a portfolio school, only to another non-profit educational institution.
If I'm a senior in high school and going to major in advertising in college in the upcoming year, can I apply?
No, applicants must be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year in college or university, or be enrolled in graduate school.
Are all the schools from AAF 10th District eligible to apply, or only schools in Texas?
The Advertising Education Foundation of Houston (AEFH) awards scholarships to college sophomores, juniors and seniors pursuing undergraduate or post graduate degrees in advertising, communications, interactive marketing, journalism, radio/tv, commercial art, public relations or related fields. Students attending colleges and universities located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, the four states in which AAF-District 10 is located, are eligible to apply. Preference is given to students who indicate a desire to join the Houston communications or integrated marketing community after graduation.
Application and Deadline
What is the last day for receiving online applications?
The deadline for receiving all applications is February 15, 2013.
Who picks the scholarship winners?
The Scholarship review committee consists of the twelve Board Members of AEFH, and the seven-member Advisory Council, who are senior professional executives in advertising and related communication firms in Houston.
How are the applicants evaluated, mostly on grades?
Grades are important, but so are all of the other factors that are evaluated such as your work experience, your school and community activities, financial need, the letter of recommendation and the written essay.
Is the official transcript taken into consideration when the committee is selecting the winners?
Yes, we are asking each applicant to send us or have the school send us their current official school transcript. Your application cannot be completely evaluated unless we also receive your transcripts.
Can I submit my letter of reference by mail or fax like last year?
No, this year each student is responsible for completing the online application along with attaching a letter of reference from a school professor or work reference. This letter must be attached in order for your on-line application to be processed.
How difficult is it really to qualify for one of your scholarships?
Last year, eleven scholarships were awarded to students from eight different schools. Winners are judged on a fairly broad level of criteria as mentioned above.
Scholarships
So how many scholarships will AEFH offer this year?
We plan to offer fourteen scholarships in 2013. Most of the scholarships will have a value of $2,000.00.
Do I need to fill out more than one application to be eligible?
You only need to send in one application. However, not all applicants will be eligible for all scholarships.
I heard that each scholarship has one or two runner-ups. Will I be notified if I'm one of them?
No, runners-up will only be notified if the winner declined or we find the applicant ineligible for the scholarship.
Awards
Is there a way to contact the winners in the past?
Yes, we have posted a list of last year's April 2012 scholarship winners on this website.
Can I attend the award ceremony even if I'm not one of the recipients?
Yes you're welcomed to attend, if you simply pay the luncheon fee. The recipients' immediate family will be invited to attend.
Internships
Does your scholarship come with an internship?
It depends on the agency or the scholarship donor. Unfortunately, many internship programs will be filled before the scholarship winners are notified in April.
If I still have more questions,
how do I contact AEFH?
